NEWBERG, Ore. – After dropping the first two games of the weekend series against the Linfield Wildcats, the George Fox Bruins swept Monday's doubleheader at the Morse Athletic Fields to split the season series.
George Fox won the first game by a score of 8-7 in 10 innings and took the second game by a score of 4-2.
GAME 1: George Fox 8, Linfield 7 (10 Innings)
The Bruins pounced early in the first inning with Jeremy Sangalang drawing a leadoff walk and Matthew Sebolsky hitting a single before the first out was recorded. George Fox scored the first run of the day on a groundout by Chase Fetzer that scored Sangalang.
Derek Williams hit a home run to left center to add another run for George Fox in the second. Linfield scored its first run of the day in the third on a double by
Levi Horner-Villa that plated
Daniel Kahn.
The Wildcats tied the game in the top of the fifth on a lead-off home run by
Tanner Jacques, his second home run in the series.
George Fox responded with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth. Sebolsky hit a single to score Franklin Leonard, Marc Audet drove in Sangalang on a base hit to center, Brandon King drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring on the play was Sebolsky and Audet scored on a wild pitch.
Horner-Villa brought the Wildcats within two in the eighth by hitting a two-run home run to left.
Wyatt Smith scored on the play.
In the top of the ninth,
Jackson Horner started the inning by drawing a walk,
Reid Sturn reached first on a fielder's choice with Horner being out on the play. Jacques followed with a double to center to move runners to second and third with one out.
Tanner Earhart came in as a pinch-hitter and got on base on a hit by pitch. Smith drew a walk to score Sturn and make it 6-5. Kahn tied the game on a sacrifice fly that brought home Jacques.
The Bruins went down in order in the bottom of the ninth. To speed up games, the Northwest Conference implemented a rule this season to place a runner at second in each extra inning.
Horner-Villa went to second to start the top of the tenth and moved to third on a wild pitch. He came around to score on a fielder's choice hit by Horner.
Sebolsky was at second to start the bottom of the ninth and he scored on a single by Audet, who advanced to third on the play due to a fielding error by Linfield. Fetzer drove in Audet to help the Bruins walk-off in game one.
Linfield's starting pitcher
Gage Mack threw 4.2 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits, three walks and struck out four batters.
Callan McRae came in relief of Mack and gave up no runs in 3.1 innings.
Cody Stevenson got credited with the loss, giving up the two runs in the tenth, he pitched a shutout ninth.
Horner-Villa had three RBIs on two hits, Jacques scored two runs on two hits. Both hit home runs as well.
The middle of the Bruins' batting order, Sebolsky, Audet and Fetzer had two hits each. Ben Willis gave up just two runs on five hits, one walk and three strikeouts in seven innings for the Bruins to start the game. Alex Abbott was the winning pitcher, he gave up no earned runs in 1.2 innings.
GAME 2: George Fox 4, Linfield 2
The game was scoreless through the first 2.5 innings before Spencer Roos drilled a home run to left center to give George Fox the first lead of the game.
Mason Arnold hit a two-run home run in the fourth to left to make it 3-0, Sebolsky scored on the home run. George Fox added another run in the fifth on a throwing error by Linfield that scored Roos.
Linfield scored both of its runs in the top of the seventh.
Kai Herko got on base via a single and came around to score on a single by Smith, who advanced to third on the play thanks to a fielding error.
Treve Earhart came in as a pinch-hitter and drove in Smith on an RBI groundout. Horner-Villa struck out to end the game.
Smith went 3 for 3 with one RBI in game two. Linfield outhit George Fox, 8-6 in the game. Roos had two hits for George Fox.
Linfield started
Evan Bates in the game, he gave up three runs and got the loss.
Skyler Manelski pitched an inning and gave up a run.
Colton Meyer pitched the final 1.2 innings, he struck out four of the five batters he faced.
Fetzer started the game for the Bruins, he gave up no runs in five innings and got the win. Andrew Sutherland was charged with the two runs, both were unearned and pitched the last two innings.
Going into the final weekend of the season, Linfield is 10-24 overall and 8-18 in the conference. George Fox is 18-17 overall and 13-14 in the NWC.

Linfield takes on Pacific Lutheran in the final series of the 2021 season. Start time is set for 12 noon on both Saturday and Sunday at Roy Helser Field.
