Stalberg scores in season debut to lift the Wildcats

NEWBERG, Ore. – Missing the first seven games of the season due to injury, Malachi Stalberg made his presence felt with a goal late in the second overtime period to lift the Linfield Wildcats over the George Fox Bruins on Saturday afternoon.
 
The win lifts the Wildcats to 2-1 in conference which is fourth in the standings, while the Bruins remain winless at 0-3 and are last in the standings.
 
The Bruins were able to get the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute on a goal on a rebound off a saved penalty kick.
 
Linfield had more shots in the first half than George Fox, but none of them fell early on.
 
Irvin Figueroa was able to get the game tied on a goal in the 73rd minute off a corner kick.
 
Neither team was able to get a goal in the remainder of regulation or the first overtime period.
 
Missing the first seven games of the season due to an injury, Malachi Stalberg made his debut on Saturday and with just 57 seconds left in the second overtime, he took a kick from outside the box and scored for the Wildcats.
 
This is the second overtime win for the Wildcats, after Chase Whittaker's goal lifted them over the Whitworth Pirates last season.
 
Linfield was the more aggressive team, putting nine shots on goal compared to five of the Bruins.
 
Wildcats' goalie Nick Van Kleek came up with four saves in the game.
 
Linfield now leads the all-time head to head 32-19-3, winning the last two over George Fox.
 
UP NEXT
The Pacific Boxers come south to McMinnville to take on the Wildcats on Sunday afternoon, that game will begin at the conclusion of Linfield women's soccer team's game against Lewis & Clark earlier in the day.
