'Cat drop series opener to Sagehens

McMINNVILLE, ORE. – Trailing early the Linfield Wildcats battled back but couldn't take down the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens at Roy Helser Field on Friday night. The Sagehens took Game 1 by a final score of 6-4 to open the four-game series. Linfield falls to 7-30 on the season while Pomona-Pitzer improves to .500 at 18-18.
 
RECAP
  • Pitzer scored first in the opening frame. A groundout by Nolan McCafferty brought in Seth Stone. Later, Hunter Hennigh drove in Jack Damelio on a single up the middle.
  • The Sagehens added to their lead in the third on a single my McCafferty that scored Damelio to make it 3-0.  
  •  The 'Cats rallied in the third and tied the game. Kurt Potter walked with the bases loaded which brought in Cam Fox. Wyatt Smith drove in two on a single to left that scored Brian Cromwell and Ben Whitt.
  • A two-run homer from Kyle Freeman gave the Sagehens the lead in the fourth making it 5-3.
  • Linfield clawed at the Pomona-Pitzer lead in the sixth when Brian Cromwell hit a single through the left side that brought in Whitt.
  • Pomona-Pitzer capitalized on a passed ball in the seventh and scored Seth Stone from third.
  • Colton Meyer started on the mound for the 'Cats and threw the first 6.2 innings. He gave up five earned runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked four. Matt McDonald entered in the middle of the seventh. He tossed the final 2.1 innings where he gave up one hit and struck out one.
  • Potter and Smith both had multiple hits in the game going 2 for 4.
