Linfield drops series to Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, CALIF. – After a strong start to the series, the Linfield Wildcats struggled on the mound against the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen. The 'Cats dropped the non-conference series with a pair of losses, 25-0 and 9-3 at Sparky Anderson Field. The series loss puts Linfield at 6-25 overall this season. Cal Lutheran improves to 20-11. The Kingsmen snapped a losing streak of six-straight games dating back to March 30th (Caltech).
 
GAME 1
  • Linfield held Cal Lutheran scoreless through the first two innings.
  • Colton Meyer started on the mound. He threw the first 3.2 innings where he gave up four earned runs on seven hits and struck out two.
  • Kurt Potter and Zach Cokos recorded the only two hits for Linfield in the game.
  • The Kingsmen scored six runs in the third, five in the fourth, four in the fifth and 10 in the sixth innings. Cal Lutheran went on to win 25-0.
  • The game was shortened to seven innings and lasted two hours and forty minutes.
GAME 2
  • Battling back from a 2-0 deficit in the third, Linfield rallied in the fifth and cut the Cal Lutheran lead in half. A single from Brian Cromwell combined with a Kingsmen error pushed Tanner Earhart across for the 'Cats first run of the game.
  • In the sixth Linfield took its first lead of the game. A triple off the bat of Earhart scored Wyatt Smith to tie the game at two. Later in the frame, Levi Horner-Villa drove in Earhart on a sacrifice-fly to right field.
  • Linfield's lead was short-lived as Cal Lutheran tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. A sacrifice fly from Tanner Wright brought in Nick Rhoades to even the score at 3-3.
  • Linfield starting pitcher Wilson Miles turned in a quality start in his first start of the season. He threw six innings where he allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits. He struck out five and walked three.
  • The 'Cats fell apart down the stretch and allowed five runs in the eighth headlined by a single from Wright that scored two with two outs.
  • Wildcat pitchers Austin Thomas and Liam Herlihy were used in relief.
  • Cromwell and Smith both went 2-4 and were the only Wildcat hitters to record multiple hits.
  • The Kingsmen outhit the Wildcats 12-10 in Game 3.
  • Cal Lutheran went on to take Game 3, 9-3 and the non-conference series 2-1.
