'Cats slip early, lose series to Boxers

FOREST GROVE, ORE. – The Linfield Wildcats dropped two Northwest Conference baseball games to the Pacific Boxers in Forest Grove at Bond Field 3-1 and 6-5. The 'Cats out-hit the boxers 16-15 but never led in the first two games of the series. Getting down early, Linfield was consistently battling back to make up for allowing Pacific two quick leads. Linfield falls to 3-8 (1-4 NWC) while Pacific improves to 11-3 (5-0 NWC).

GAME 1
  • History was made in the first inning of the day when Linfield starting pitcher Cason Cunningham picked up his 276th career strikeout. He now holds the record for most career strikeouts in Linfield baseball history with 285 after striking out 10.
  • The 'Cats trailed early when the Boxers got an RBI single from Derek Legeza to make it 1-0 Pacific.
  • Linfield would tie the game in the fourth. Levi Horner-Villa singled up the middle and brought in Brian Cromwell from third who led the inning off with a double.
  • The Boxers retook the lead in the fifth when Ryan Krout hit a triple off the wall to straightaway center field and scored Blair from second to make it 2-1.
  • Pacific tacked on another run in the sixth when Ryan Krout tripled with two outs and Ian Blair slapped a single into right to extend the Boxer lead to 3-1.
  • Cunningham left in the sixth for Matt McDonald who entered the inning with two outs. Cunningham struck out 10 and allowed three runs on eight hits.
  • McDonald threw the final 1.1 innings where he did not allow a run, struck out one and gave up one hit.
  • Pacific starter Casey Brown went the distance and threw his second complete game of the season. He allowed one run on seven hits and struck out 11 Wildcats.
GAME 2
  • The Wildcats trailed early in Game 2 after the Boxers plated one run in each of the first three innings despite only tallying three hits. A pair of sacrifice flies and a wild pitch allowed the Boxers to take to the lead.
  • Colton Robinson crushed a solo homer over the wall in left off the Bond Field scoreboard to make it 2-1. Robinson's home run was the first of his career.
  • The Boxers big inning came in the fourth when Linfield starting pitcher Colton Meyer ran into trouble. Pacific scored three runs on four hits including a two-RBI single from Brad Altomare making it 6-1. Mitch Grove entered to pitch with one out in the fourth inning.
  •  The Wildcats bounced back and scored three runs in the sixth. A single from Cameron Fox scored Alec Cook followed by a groundout from Tanner Earhart that scored Zach Cokos and Fox eventually scored on a wild pitch. The Linfield rally made it 6-5, Pacific.
  • Wilson Miles was the third Wildcat to throw, he threw the final 2.2 innings where he struck out four and did not give up a run.
  • Linfield's bats went cold over the final frames and lost Game 2 and the series to the Pacific Boxers, 6-5.
