MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – After losing two straight in Northwest Conference play, the Linfield Wildcats have now won two straight with a 3-0 win over the Whitman Blues on Friday Night. Scoring for the Wildcats were
Sydney Kuehn,
Kristen Burke and
Michayla Sponsel.
The win helps the Wildcats move to 3-2 in conference play, which is fourth in the league and the Blues fall to 1-4, which is eighth in the conference.
The Wildcats were aggressive to start the game, having three shots on goal in the first 15 minutes and on the fourth shot on goal, Kuehn converted for her sixth of the season, assisted by Sponsel and
Amidee Colleknon.
The goal by Kuehn puts her in the solo lead for goals and points in the conference and also puts the senior forward in a tie for 9
th all-time in Linfield women's soccer program history.
It did not take long for the Wildcats to add to their lead as Burke added her fourth of the season on assists by Sponsel.
Burke is now tied for third in goals and fourth in points in the conference. The junior forward is also 14
th all-time in goals in program history.
Sponsel came into this game having zero points on the season, the Portland, Oregon, native finished with four points on the night. She assisted on the first two goals of the game and scored in the 23
rd minute off an assist from Burke and
Taylor Cole.
The Wildcats scored three goals in a span of eight minutes in the first half and sailed to their third conference win of the season, both of their last two wins have been a final score of 3-0.
Madi Reimer started this game in goal for the Wildcat after missing last Sunday's win over Lewis & Clark due to a shoulder injury. The Sherwood, Oregon, native made two saves and picked up her second shutout of the season.
The Wildcats had 15 shots, including 11 on goal. Their shots per game average of 15.4 leads the NWC. Linfield also had 10 corner kicks, while Whitman had none.
Linfield now leads the all-time head to head 26-22-5 over Whitman. The Wildcats are unbeaten against the Blues since 2014 and have won the last seven matchups.
This was the fourth time that the Wildcats scored three or more goals in 2019, they are 4-0 in those games.
