Season of good vibrations comes to a close

NEWBERG, Ore. – George Fox completed its second straight unbeaten run through the Northwest Conference, bouncing Linfield 23-3 Saturday at the Austin Sports Complex

GFU's Jess Hanson scored seven goals and assisted on four other tallies, and Meridith Teal chipped in with four scores to lead the home-standing Bruins.

Genna Hughes led Linfield with two goals in the NWC finale for both clubs.

Lois Ray of George Fox scored 58 seconds into the match but Hughes answered less than two minutes later from a free position shot, knotting the contest at 1.

The score remained tied until the 25:37 mark when Jennifer Burke scored to take a 2-1 lead. From there, the Bruins reeled off the next seven goals before Hughes could add a second tally for the Wildcats. That made the score 8-2 in favor of the home team at the 13:42 mark.

George Fox closed out the first half by scoring the next five goals, taking commanding 13-2 lead at the break.

"The score did not show how hard we worked" said coach Brittany Hartmann. "Going against the No. 1 team with only one substitute was a major uphill battle."

The 'Cats were outshot 25-3 in the opening period and the Bruins owned a commanding lead in draw controls, 12-3. Kylee Duey started in goal for the Wildcats, making 10 first-half saves.

The Bruins continued to control the match when play resumed, scoring the first eight goals of the second period to push the score to 21-2. Gabriella Moe tallied her only goal of the match with 7:24 remaining on an assist from Maya Peterson.

George Fox added two more tallies to complete the scoring.

George Fox took 46 shots to Linfield's seven and gained 22 draw controls to Linfield's five. The Bruins also picked up more ground balls, ending with a 26-19 advantage.

Hughes finished her final season with 47 goals and was credited with 11 assists for a total of 58 points.

Epi Roldan-Rayo covered the Linfield goal in the second half, giving up 10 goals and making one save. George Fox had three goalies see action during the day. Mikaela Easterlin played the first 30 minutes giving up two goals and making one save for the win. Alyssa Poffenroth played 25:34 to open the second half, making two saves and giving up one goal. Zoe Jorgensen finished out the reaming 4:26 of the contest.

Hartmann had nothing but praise for her student-athletes.

"I'm so proud of how our players continued to fight through adversity in each and every match," she said.

The 'Cats finished third in the final Northwest Conference standings at 4-4. Their season included sweeps of Pacific and Puget Sound. Linfield was 6-7 overall, a five-win improvement from the previous season.
