Phil Whitehead is in the second year of his second stint as women’s tennis coach at Linfield.
Whitehead has more than 30 years of coaching experience at the high school, collegiate, and club levels.
Whitehead is no stranger to Linfield, having led two varsity programs as head coach and assisting with a third three decades earlier. He returns as women’s tennis coach, a role he held for six seasons from 1988 until 1994. During that span, he compiled a 57-49-1 win-loss record, twice being honored as the Northwest Conference’s Coach of the Year. He also carried the title of women’s soccer head coach from 1990 until 1992, and served as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Linfield from 1989 to 1994.
Most recently, Whitehead spent the 2023-24 academic year working as women’s tennis coach at Central Oregon Community College in Bend, where he also served as the college’s club and intramural sports organizer. He previously spent time as boys tennis coach at Mountain View High School (2020-24), girls tennis coach at Newberg High School (2002-04), and was women’s tennis coach at Willamette University (1996-99).
Additionally, Whitehead worked as lead tennis instructor at Central Oregon C.C. for two years (2022-24), and was tennis director and head professional at Tennis West Racquet Club in Corvallis (1994) and Black Butte Ranch.
A native of Redmond, Oregon, Whitehead is a graduate of Central Oregon Community College where he earned an Associate of Arts degree in political science.
