NEWBERG, Ore. --- Freshman
Isabella Grutsch smashed her previous best heptathalon score, putting up 3,978 points, finishing fourth at the Northwest Conference Championships Multi-Events.
Grutsch finished top-three in two of the events, the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump, also placing fifth in the 200-meter sprint. She posted a score of 3,674 three weeks ago in Forest Grove, crushing her own record score by a freshman in Linfield program history.
In the field of 16 athletes, Grutsch finished outside of the top-ten in just two events, maintaining fourth-place over the course of the two-day meet. She earned two new personal-best marks in both the javelin (27.70-meters) and the 800-meter run (2:45.02).
"I couldn't be more proud of Bella and the way she competed over these last two days." Said Head Coach
Travis Olson.
"For a freshman to be 4th in the conference is outstanding. She has a bright future."
George Fox's Makaylah Johnson claimed first place in the NWC's women's heptathalon with a score of 4,586.
Junior
Durham Huson did not earn a score for the men's decathlon, not completing the javelin and 1500-meter run events to close out the meet on Tuesday. Huson was in sixth of 10 competitors for the majority of the meet, falling to seventh before the final two events.
Huson earned two new season-bests though, tossing a best mark of 8.95-meters in the shot put and running a time of 54.77 seconds in the 400-meter. His two best finishes came in the high jump and 110-meter hurdles, placing fifth in both.
George Fox's Caleb Smith earned the NWC's men's decathlon title with a score of 6,852.
"I feel horrible for Durham. A freak accident in the pole vault, which ended his decathlon. He showed a lot of class and I am really proud of the competitor he was throughout the competition. I hope he recovers soon" said Olson
