SPOKANE, Wash. – Led by linebackers
Wyatt Abrigo and
Hudson Reink, and safeties
Colby Kalaukoa and
Brady Crenshaw, the Linfield defense piled up eight quarterback sacks to highlight a stellar defensive effort in leading the 23rd-ranked Linfield Wildcats to a 32-19 Northwest Conference victory over archrival Whitworth Saturday afternoon before a packed Homecoming crowd at the Whitworth Pine Bowl.
Linfield (4-1, 3-0 NWC) won its third straight game and moved within one victory of clinching the program's 70th consecutive winning season. The Wildcats can extend their renowned "Streak" of plus-.500 campaigns next Saturday when Pacific Lutheran visits McMinnville.
Â
Defending NWC champion Whitworth (3-2, 2-1 NWC) only mounted a serious challenge in the middle stages of the fourth quarter. But just as the game's momentum had seemingly swung in the home team's favor, a special teams miscue proved costly.Â
Abrigo totaled two sacks, plus two other tackles for loss, while Reink contributed six tackles, including a sack and one other tackle for loss. Kalaukoa and Crenshaw were each credited with six stops.
Defensive ends
Aidan Highberger and
Jaydon Kaio each made 1½ sacks, while
Lake Christensen and
TraMayne Jenkins added solo sacks. Combined, the Wildcats' eight quarterback sacks accounted for 77 yards in losses, three short of the single-game record of 11 set against Willamette in 1984.
Â
The Wildcats scored the first 15 points during the opening 22 minutes, Linfield accounted for a 19-yard touchdown run by
Matthew Spurbeck, a 32-yard TD reception by

Jayce Bareng for a 24-yard touchdown with 1:28 before intermission.
Â
Linfield led 22-7 at the break. The Wildcats outgained the Pirates in total yards through two quarters, 291-99, holding the hosts to minus 19 yards rushing in the half.
Â
Riding the energy of its Homecoming crowd, Whitworth sliced the margin to five points in the second half, getting Iden Bone's 25-yard field goal early in the third quarter and Tyson Hoke's 19-yard TD reception from Logan Lacio with 13:15 left to play.
Â
Needing only a touchdown to take the lead, the Pirates forced the Wildcats to punt, leading to the turning point of the game.
Cade Johannsen's 58-yard boot bounced off the chest of Whitworth punt returner Hayden Throneberry and was recovered by Wildcats senior
Hayden Eiguren at the Pirates' 12-yard line. Four plays later, on fourth-and-1 from the 3, McNabb connected with
Dane Meddaugh with 9:50 to go for some critical insurance points. O'Dell's extra point gave the 'Cats a two-score advantage, 29-17.
Â
Whitworth added a safety with just over three minutes left in the game, before the Wildcats tacked on an O'Dell field goal from 28 yards out to complete the scoring.

Offensively, McNabb completed 20 of 28 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns.
