MCMINNVILLE, Ore. --- Linfield men's wrestling hosted the annual Mat 'Cat Invitational on Sunday inside Ted Wilson Gymnasium, earning three fourth-place finishers on the day.
At 125-pounds, senior
Jacob Moore's day began in the quarterfinals following a bye to begin the tournament. He dominated his opponent with a clean 16-0 technical fall, advancing to the semifinals. Moore came just short in a 8-6 decision. He bounced back shortly after, taking a late lead in the consolation semifinal, 14-13 decision, earning his spot in the third-place match. Unfortunately the senior had to medically forfeit, finishing fourth in the 125-pound bracket with a pair of wins.
Junior
Carson Jackson's got off to a strong start, cruising to a 15-2 major decision in the quarterfinals at 133-pounds, but a late injury in the match cut his day short.
Max Vander Meide dropped his first match at 141-pounds late in the second period, bouncing back with a pin of his own before finishing the day 1-2.
Fermin Carrillo earned a bye in the 149-pound bracket, but fell in each of his two matches.
Lucien Lefebvre took a 16-1 tech fall to kick off his day in the 165-pound bracket alongside fellow senior
Alex Tapia. Lefebvre would go 2-2 on the day, pinning his opponent in the first period of the consolation round two, while Tapia was 1-1 prior to having to medically forfeit.
Trey Dieringer battled back from a pin in the first round of the 184-pound bracket, winning three-straight via injury, tech fall, and major decision, fighting back to consolation semifinal. His chances of placing fell just short, as the junior was pinned in his last match, going 3-2 for the tournament.
Junior
Ethan Ensrud also bounced back from an early loss, as he pinned three-straight opponents all in the first period, advancing to the third-place match thanks to an opponents medical forfeit. In the 197-pound third-place match, Ensrud and his opponent from Corban kept it close, but without a takedown, the junior finished the tournament in fourth.
In the heavyweight bracket,
Julian Ortiz and
Camden Roofener competed for the Wildcats, with Ortiz's day cut short due to injury. Roofener won his first two matches, one by a pin, and the other via a 9-3 decision. Falling in the semifinal, Roofener climbed back to the third-place match following a narrow 3-2 decision, but came just short via a 4-2 decision. The freshman placed fourth in his Mat 'Cat debut.
The Wildcats compete again in two weeks, travelling once again to Olympia, Washington, to compete in the Evergreen Open hosted by Evergreen State College on January 18 at 9 a.m.
