MCMINNVILLE, Ore.--- Linfield men's tennis served up the fall season opener over two days this weekend at home, gaining valuable experience ahead of next weekend's Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Regional meet in Newberg, Oregon. The event spanning the weekend acted as a jamboree-style event that helped the teams prepare for the largest event of the Fall season.Â
"I told the boys that I wasn't focused on results this weekend, but I can't lie, I really liked our results." said head coach
Todd Mansfield following the jamboree.Â
The team finished above a.500 win-percentage for the weekend for the first time in 10 years. They were led by Wildcat No.1Â
Brooks Lerfald, who proved he is among the top singles players in the league by not losing a set in singles over the weekend. His win over the top Lewis and Clark player, Kaden Sigurdson, let the league know this season he's coming in ready to compete with the best.Â
"Last year I was coming off double hip surgery, so I started slow. This off-season, I worked really hard on my conditioning and I think some of these early results speak for themselves." said Lerfald.Â
Brooks wasn't the only player with a great weekend.
Cameron Paulsen went 6-0 with wins over Pacific, Willamette and Lewis and Clark players. Plus, he and new teammate
Joey Henderson proved very formidable with two wins over Pacific and Willamette. He then pulled off what may have been the upset of the weekend, when he and
Brandon Tran toppled the No.2 Lewis and Clark duo, 8-6.
Up next, the Cats travel to compete in the ITA West Regional hosted by George Fox in Newberg, Oregon, next Friday through Sunday starting at 9am.Â
