LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Linfield men's and women's wrestling teams had a five-hour drive back from Eastern Oregon on Saturday night to think about what just transpired.
"We have three weeks to get dialed in for post-season competition," Wildcats coach
Frank Johnson said. "There were some positive takeaways from tonight, but that's the biggest one right now."
The Wildcat women fell 14-0 to the Mountaineers, and the Linfield men were outscored 46-6. The Mountaineers, who compete at the NAIA level, are ranked No. 17 on the women's side and No. 21 on the men's.
At 133 pounds, Linfield's
Max Vander Meide was leading 5-1 in the third round when he got turned and pinned. At 174,
Ethan Ensrud lost a 9-8 heartbreaker to the EOU's Kylan Guerra – reversing an earlier result between the two, when Ensrud pinned Guerra just before the final horn.
Jacob Moore,
Carlos Kisokwa and
Lucien Lefebvre were all in competitive matches also, but didn't do enough of the little things right to get their hands raised.
