SPOKANE, Wash. --- Linfield men's wrestling had eight Wildcats compete in Sunday's Spokane Open, with
Ethan Ensrud and
Jacob Moore making the podium in their weight classes. Ensrud's title at 197-pounds marked Linfield's first time having two finalists in a tournament.
Duke Wentzel (2-5) won his first 125-pound match of the tournament, trailing early in the match, but quickly escaped and pinned his opponent 67-seconds into the first period. Wentzel fell short in a close battle in his next match, 7-6, in extra time. His day came to a close via a pin in the first period of his third match.
Also competing at 125-pounds,
Jacob Moore (5-3) scored 16+ in each of his first three matches, earning a technical fall, decision, and major decision, putting him in the 125-pound championship bout. Moore trailed early in the final match, 9-2 after the first period, but battled his way through to the third with a nine-point deficit. His opponent from Providence (Mont.) took down Moore twice in the final 90-seconds, ending the match via major decision, 19-5. Moore was one of two 'Cats to make the podium on Sunday.
Dean Smith (0-4) and
Carson Jackson (5-4) both competed at 133-pounds, where Smith dropped both of his matches. Jackson dominated his first two bouts by tech fall (18-2) and major decision (12-2), but was pinned in his next two matches to finish a level 2-2 for the tournament.
At 141-pounds,
Max Vander Meide (6-4) pinned his opponent in the first match, but was pinned in the ensuing match. Vander Meide bounced back in match three, once trailing 5-3 early, to take a 12-8 decision. In his fourth and final bout of the day, Vander Meide was pinned by his opponent from the University of Washington.
Damon Gasilos (5-4) kept his momentum rolling from a 2-0 record in duals last weekend, winning his first 157-pound match via tech fall (17-2) and his second match by injury default. Gasilos' day was cut short, falling in his final to matches that followed.
Lucien Lefebvre dropped his first bout at 174-pounds, rebounding with two dominant victories by tech fall and major decision. His final opponent from Simon Fraser halted Lefebvre's momentum with a tech fall to cut the final match short in the third period.
Ethan Ensrud (7-2) had the best outing for Linfield, allowing just one-point to his opponents over five matches. Ensrud pinned his opponent to begin the day with a win, followed by a tech fall and two more pins that sent him to the championship match. In the biggest bout of his career, Ensrud led 1-0 after the first period due to an escape, before a three point near fall led to a pin that gave the Wildcat the first win for the program since it was reinstated three seasons ago. Ensrud went 5-0 on the day, moving his season record to 7-2.
