Moore, Ensrud reach finals at Evergreen Open

OLYMPIA, Wash. – In his first matches in five weeks, Linfield's 125-pound junior Jacob Moore won three straight matches to reach the finals at Sunday's Evergreen Open, hosted by The Evergreen State College.

In the semifinals, Moore needed a takedown in overtime to beat Jesus Campos of Clackamas Community College 20-17. In the championship match, he ended up falling to Simon Fraser's Ben Sommers. Still, it was a good tournament for the junior from Silverton to get rid of the rust from the weeks away from competition.

"When he's healthy, Jacob can compete with anyone," said Linfield coach Frank Johnson. "It's good to see him back and rounding into shape at just the right time, as we head toward the post-season."

Wildcats sophomore Ethan Ensrud also reached the finals at the tournament, the third straight open tournament in which he has managed a runner-up finish. Ensrud went 3-1 on the day to push his season record to 23-11.

In his quarterfinal win over Eastern Oregon's Kylan Guerra, Ensrud was trailing by three points with less than 30 seconds remaining – although he had locked up a riding-time point, so effectively, he was trailing by two points as the clock dwindled.

A three-point takedown at the buzzer would give him a one-point win, but Ensrud did even better, taking down Guerra with 10 seconds on the clock and quickly pinning the Mountaineers freshman.

"Ethan has ice water in his veins," Johnson said. "He's never out of a match."

On the women's side of the bracket, only two Wildcats competed in Olympia due to various injuries and January Term study abroad trips. But Abisua Perez-Diaz, who won her first collegiate match a two weeks ago, prevailed again in Olympia for her fourth victory.

"She's starting to come along and believe in herself," Johnson said. "If you saw how hard she worked in the offseason, this isn't a surprise. She has earned every single one of these wins."
