Brynn Nelson, Vern Marshall Award Winner

Brynn Nelson chosen as Vern Marshall Award winner

Leading Linfield to an historic softball season, Brynn Nelson has been named the female recipient of the Vern Marshall Award.

Presented annually, the award was created in memory of former Linfield student-athlete and longtime college and professional sports referee Vern Marshall Sr. of the Class of 1957. Established in 2002, the Vern Marshall Award salutes the top male and female athletes who compete with the greatest tenacity.

A first team National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American and Northwest Conference Player of the Year, Nelson registered a career season in leading the Wildcats to a 50-4 record and third-place national finish at the NCAA Division III Championship.

An all-NWC honoree in 2023, the always reliable second baseman wasn't satisfied with her performance and worked tirelessly throughout the offseason to revamp her swing mechanics and hitting approach. She was rewarded with an incredible 2024 campaign that saw her total 74 hits, 13 doubles, 15 home runs and 62 RBIs while maintaining a .477 batting average.

The Bonney Lake, Wash., native earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors for the second time in as many seasons. She earned first-team All-NWC for the first time and was a NFCA first-team All-Region X selection this season.

Nelson's dominance on offense helped power the Wildcats to a new program record of 44 consecutive victories while grabbing the NWC regular season and NWC Tournaments titles along with NCAA Regional and Super Regional crowns.

Nelson and the Wildcats finished third nationally at the NCAA Championship, the highest finish by a Linfield team in any sport since 2015. Their record of 50-4 stands as the second-highest win total in program history.
