Wildcat women prepare for NCWWC regionals in Texas

DENTON, Texas – And then there were four.

Late-season injuries to several key members of the Wildcat women's wrestling team thinned the ranks of the team heading to Texas this weekend for the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships Region VI tournament. But coaches Frank Johnson and Alyssa Lampe are excited about seeing how the Linfield wrestlers stack up against competition they haven't seen all year.

Sophie Cornwall, Klaira Flatt, Alice Rickett and Ayana Medina will wrestle Sunday at the tournament, which includes 11 NCAA Division II and III programs. The top four in each weight class qualify for the national championships, scheduled for March 8-9 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The NCWWC includes all NCAA programs (Division I, II and III) with women's wrestling programs. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics voted at this month to recommend Divisions I, II and III sponsor legislation to their own women's wrestling championships starting in 2026. Until then, the NCWWC is the umbrella organization for any NCAA college or university with a program.

"It's a very competitive field and we haven't faced many of the teams, but I think we're as prepared as we can be," Johnson said. "Our wrestlers are finding success in areas they've focused on in practice, they're showing tremendous growth and they're peaking at the right time."

Medina is a returning qualifier to NCWWC nationals, and leads Linfield with pins (8) this season.

Fresh off a win over the No. 1-ranked junior college wrestler in the country, Rickett enters regionals on a 10-match winning streak. She hasn't posted a loss since early November.

Flatt is Linfield's iron woman in terms of durability. She leads both the men's and the women's teams in terms of total matches (32).

"I like the team we're sending," Lampe said. "Sophie has been coming along fast in recent practices, Alice is tough as nails, Klaira is the most coachable person I've ever met and the sky is the limit for Ayana and her talent."

Not joining the team will be returning national qualifier Emily Sullenger, who suffered a recent injury. Or senior Riley Omonaka, who was on a three-match winning streak at the end of the season before a freak accident ended her wrestling career.

"It's a bummer to lose Riley and Emily so late in the season, along with some of the others from earlier in the year," Johnson said. "But I think the women we have going will get a lot out of the experience and it will help us build for a really bright future. In many ways, I feel like we're just getting started."

The field in Denton will include seven NCAA Division II colleges or universities along with four from Division III.
  • Division II: Adams State (Colo.), Chadron State (Neb.), Colorado Mesa, Minot State (N.D.), Simon Fraser (B.C.), Texas Woman's University, University of Sioux Falls (S.D.).
  • Division III: Linfield, Pacific, Schreiner University (Texas), University of the Ozarks (Arkansas).
