PORTLAND, Ore. – Freshman
Kai Laitinen made an immediate splash for the Linfield men with two event victories, and
Kalea Mullins and
Sarah Arpag each won two individual races and teamed to swim on a winning relay as part of a Northwest Conference dual-meet sweep by the Wildcats of the Lewis & Clark Pioneers Friday night at Zehntbauer Swim Pavilion.
After 22 events, the Linfield women stood atop the team standings by a 113-78 count. The Wildcat men were 114-84 victors on the opposite side of the ledger.
MEN
Laitinen, a second-generation Wildcat swimmer, won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:06.70, besting teammate
Jack Gallo's time of 17:17.32 by more than 10 seconds. Laitinen returned to the water later to lock up first place in the 400 individual medley in 4:23.38, edging teammate
Gavin Smith, who clocked 4:28.50.
Rocco Velie secured first place in the 200 freestyle in 1:46.05, more than four seconds faster than runner of Micha Rysavay of Lewis & Clark, who finished in 1:50.50. Velie also captured second place in the 100 butterfly in 53.33.
Freshman
Sam Postlewait was the winner of the 100 backstroke, winning by nearly five full seconds in 54.47.
Elijah Ng was third in 1:01.08.
Jack Gallo nipped Laitinen in the 500 freestyle by less than one second, 4:59.27 to 4:59.92. Smith was fourth in 5:05.30.
Ivan Tontchev blazed to a five-second victory in the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.65.
Linfield's 200-yard medley 'A' relay took top honors with a comfortable eight-second victory. The newly formed foursome of Postlewait, Tontchev, Velie and
Carson Washburn reached the wall in 1:37.57, besting the Wildcats' B relay time of 1:45.63 posted by Ng,
Sasha Moore,
Levi Buker and
Nikola Jelusic.
In the closing race of the day, the 200 freestyle relay, the Wildcat quartet of Postlewait, Jelusic,
Cadogan Wheat and Washburn placed second in 1:31.47.
WOMEN
Mullins was a clear-cut winner in the 400 individual medley, finishing the race more than 30 seconds in front of runner-up AJ Schroeder of L&C (5:22.42). Mullins posted her second win of the day in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall in 56.67.
Lauren Bobo-Shisler was third in 57.72.
Arpag won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.45, leading a 1-3-4 Linfield finish.
Ellie Schmidt was third in 1:07.24 and
Taila Patterson placed fourth in 1:09.22. Arpag also edged L&C's Angie Cummings for the top spot in the 100 backstroke by the slimmest of margins, 1:04.23 to 1:04.24.
Bobo-Shisler was seeing her first live competition after missing the latter half of last season due to a study abroad opportunity. The senior prevailed in the 200 freestyle in 2:06.90. Transfer
Chloe Lazaraton was third in 2:10.30.
Kirsti Keppo turned in an impressive season debut in the 500 freestyle, winning the event in 5:25.43.
Newcomers
Alana Zumbrum and
Ruby Bentz went 2-3 in a tight finish in the 100 breaststroke. L&C's Dahlia Linkow won in 1:16.09, followed closely by Zumbrum (1:16.22) and Bentz (1:16.39).
Linfield's 200 freestyle 'A' relay, featuring veterans Arpag, Bobo-Shisler,
Caley Haydu and Mullins, outpaced the Wildcat 'B' relay of Keppo, Lazaraton, Schmidt and Zumbrum, 1:43.13 to 1:49.20.

Linfield returns to action next Saturday, Nov. 9, when the Wildcats host the George Fox Bruins at 1 p.m. at the Linfield Aquatics Center.
