Linfield tunes-up for ITA's at Pacific 5-Way Tourney

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Linfield women's tennis team had a chance to shake off offseason rust and find their form Saturday and Sunday, competing in a five-way tournament hosted by the Pacific Boxers.
 
In addition to Linfield and Pacific the three other Northwest Conference schools in Oregon participated as well.
 
Players were sorted into five, eight-player bracket flights for singles competition and two, eight-team bracket flights for doubles.
 
SINGLES
Freshman Emily Redwood had the most success of any Wildcat in singles play over the weekend.
 
The Los Angeles product was seeded into the "Purple Flight" and ran away with an opening-round win against fellow freshman Alicia Sola of Willamette, 6-1, 6-0.
 
Redwood advanced to the finals of Purple Flight with another commanding victory, besting Pacific's Keilyn Futter 6-2, 6-2.
 
She then faced Lewis & Clark's Yenny Futter in the finals on Sunday, but fell 6-3, 7-5.
 
In the "Pink Flight" junior Alexis Garner cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 first-round win over Cassey Hitch of George Fox but then fell to eventual Pink Flight champion Mia Yamaguchi of Pacific, 6-1, 7-6.
 
Two other Wildcats posted first round wins in their respective flights.
 
Sophomore Lisa Ponti beat Pacific's Anna Emerson 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the "Green Flight" before falling to the eventual winner of the bracket, Shanah Denham of George Fox, 6-1, 6-2.
 
Meanwhile in the "Blue Flight" freshman Samantha Baltz beat George Fox's Sophie Denham 6-1, 7-6 before falling to Pacific's Sofia Mazzola in the semi-final. Mazzola would go on to win the bracket.
 
Freshman Kaitlyn Canubida fell to eventual Blue Flight runner-up Elizabeth Cook of George Fox in the opening round but managed to reach the finals of the consolation side of the bracket.
 
Junior Emma Tuttle was seeded into the "Yellow Flight" which featured the top competition of the tournament. Tuttle was matched against top-seeded Cassidy Binder of Pacific, falling 6-1, 6-1.
 
Tuttle then lots on the consolation side to Lewis & Clark's Seraphina Vossen.
 
DOUBLES
Linfield submitted three doubles pairing, headlined by Tuttle and Redwood teaming up as the No. 2 seed in the doubles "Red Flight" bracket.
 
The duo managed to dispatch George Fox's team of Cook and Abigail Bond 8-3, before getting swept in the semi-finals by Binder and her sister, Sydnie. The Pacific sister-act would go on to win the Red Flight final 8-2.
 
Garner and Canubida were also seeded into the Red Flight, but fell to the Bruins' Kalli Wiker and Riley Bobkiewicz, 8-2.
 
Ponti and Baltz were the top seed in the "Black Flight" bracket but found themselves upset in the first round by Pacific's duo Yamaguchi and Valentina Casab-Klescova.
 
The consolation side of the doubles brackets were not played out due to inclement weather.
 
NEXT
Linfield will spend this week on final preparation of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Fall Regional tournament, held Sept. 29-Oct. 1 in Newberg, Ore., hosted by George Fox.
