Matt Metcalf Male Athlete of the Year

Two-Sport Star: Metcalf named Male Athlete of the Year

A two-sport standout for Linfield over the course of his five-year career, Matt Metcalf of the Wildcats' football and track and field programs will go out in style as the 2022-23 Male Athlete of the Year.

Metcalf captured his third First Team All-Northwest Conference accolade on the gridiron in 2022. The graduate student center was selected as a First Team All-American by both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and the Associated Press (AP). He became a unanimous All-American when D3football.com named him a Second Team honoree.

A native of Eugene, Metcalf became the 154th All-American in Linfield football history. The Wildcats extended their streak to 15 straight seasons with an All-American.

Metcalf captained a veteran offensive line in 2022, helping to lead the Wildcats (10-1, 7-0 NWC) to the program's 21st unbeaten regular season and 38th NWC championship. The team's season ended in the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Behind a strong O-line, Linfield scored 66 touchdowns, 23 coming on the ground. The 'Cats averaged 435.5 yards of total offense per game. They finished the season ranked fourth in Division III in scoring offense (44.7 PPG) while also ranking seventh in the nation in third down percentage (53.7).

A staple among the NWC's top throwers, Metcalf earned All-America status in the javelin with a fifth-place finish as a junior at the 2021 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Metcalf finished in fifth place in the javelin at this year's NWC Championships, heaving a mark of 188 feet, 8 inches, to pick up four points for the Linfield men. He just missed a top-eight distance in the hammer throw, reaching 134 feet, 6 inches.

The Linfield Open on May 6 was the Wildcats' final home meet of the season. Metcalf celebrated Senior Day with a win in the javelin, throwing a season-best 196 feet, 10 inches, more than 10 feet farther than the runner-up. The mark ranks No. 13 in Division III this season.
