Linfield men hang on to fifth place at NWC Championships

SALEM, Ore. – Linfield held on tight to fifth place in the team standings at the NWC Men's Golf Championships, hosted by Willamette at the Creekside Golf Club. 
 
After turning in a team score of 310 in the first round, the Wildcats posted a 311 in the second round to finish with a two-round score of 621, 10 strokes ahead of sixth-place Whitman and nine strokes back of fourth-place Pacific Lutheran.
 
Sophomore Chris Cayford just missed out on a top-10 finish by one stroke, finishing in a three-way tie for 12th place with Riley Lankford of Willamette and Matthew Siemer of Lewis & Clark with a score of 8-over-par 152. Cayford carded a 3-over-par 75 on the par-72 course on Day 2.
 
Junior Ahron Abraham finished in 20th place with a score of 157 while sophomores Riley Lynch and Trevor Price rounded out the Wildcats' scoring players with scores of 158. Price improved by two strokes in the second round. Rounding out the 'Cats was fellow sophomore Bryce Hatcher, who ended the tournament in 32nd place at 163 after a five-stroke improvement between rounds.
 
The favored Willamette Bearcats were 32-strokes ahead of runner-up George Fox with an even-par 576. The Bruins placed second with a score of 608, edging out third-place Whitworth by one stroke.
 
The Bearcats had three players in the top three in the individual standings. Austin Davis earned medalist honors with a final score of 2-under-par 142. Pacific Lutheran's Joshua Clogston was right on his heels in second place at 1-under-par 143. Both players turned in a 70 on Sunday while Davis' teammate, Andrew Kibbee, turned in a low round of 67. Kibbee and fellow Bearcat Alex Weirth tied for third place at an even-par 144.
 
The 'Cats placed sixth at both the NWC Fall and Spring Classics to also finish in sixth place in the final NWC men's golf point standings with 14 points. Linfield was also sixth in the standings in 2020-21.
