NEW ORLEANS – What a week for
Keaton Wood.
Â
The Linfield graduate student continues to shine on the track after earning All-American honors in the men's heptathlon during the indoor season. Following a record-breaking performance at the Jim Klein Multi-Events in Santa Barbara, California, Wood was named the Northwest Conference Men's Field Student-Athlete of the Week as well as the USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Men's National Athlete of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Â
Wood broke a 12-year-old school record in the men's decathlon. He scored a Division III-leading 7,254 points, surpassing the previous program record of 7,125 points held by recent Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame inductee
Josh Lovell. The mark moved Wood to No. 9 on the Division III all-time list. It's also the best total scored by a Division III athlete before April 16.
Â
The Lake Oswego, Oregon, native placed second in the meet to the Okanagan Athletics Track Club's Rostam Turner (7,269), who was competing for a spot on the Canadian National Team. Wood's previous best point total was 6,612. He notched personal bests in the 110-meter hurdles (14.73), 100-meter dash (11.01), 400-meter dash (49.07), high jump (6 feet, 5 inches) and 1,500-meter run (4:38.32). Wood ranks in the nation's top 10 in four events, including the decathlon.
Â
Wood is the first Linfield athlete to be named the Division III Men's National Athlete of the Week during the outdoor season since Jake Mihelich earned the honor for the second time in his impressive career back in 2017.
