Linfield challenges perennial NWC power Whitman

MATCH PREVIEW

The Linfield men's and women's tennis teams gear up to take on Northwest Conference perennial power Whitman Blues this weekend.
 
The women host the Blues on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Linfield Tennis Center. The men's match is in Walla Walla Saturday at 1 p.m.

THE WILDCATS WOMEN
Linfield is off to a 2-0 start in Northwest Conference play and 3-2 overall, defeating Whitworth and Willamette by matching scores of 8-1 in conference matches. Reigning Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week Tessa Kern is 2-1 against NCAA Division III opponents at No. 1 singles and at No. 1 doubles.
 
The Wildcats are 31-19 all-time against the Blues and have won three of the last four meetings. The two teams were scheduled to face one another in 2020, just days after the season was canceled.
 
THE LINFIELD MEN
The Wildcats are coming off a 9-0 win over the Bearcats in Salem on Saturday, led by Blake Fuentes Gilbert, who received his first Northwest Conference Men's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week honor on Monday.
 
The Wildcats' top-two doubles tandems have won three straight matches. Michael Manion and Cameron Ventura are the No. 1 doubles pair, Will Worth and Ethan Myers play at second doubles.
 
THE BLUES WOMEN
The Whitman women's tennis team is 1-0 overall and 1-1 in conference play, including a forfeit loss to the Bearcats two weeks ago. The Blues defeated the Puget Sound Loggers by a score of 6-3 last weekend, two of three losses were by forfeit.
 
The Blues' pairing of Irene Tsai and Grace Carter was victorious in doubles. Whitman won each of the five singles matches that were contested.
 
THE WHITMAN MEN
The Blues men are off to a 5-0 start and are 2-0 in conference play. They have a pair of wins over Willamette and Puget Sound as well as a victory over Whitworth. Whitman has dropped just three individual matches.
 
Playing at No. 2 singles, Tom Chang is undefeated with a record of 3-0 and he also has a win at third singles. The duo of Jack Freer and Andreas Mueller-Immergluck is undefeated at 3-0 at the No. 1 doubles spot.
 
The Whitman men are 32-8 all-time against Linfield. The Wildcats last defeated the Blues on March 31, 2005.
 
UP NEXT
Linfield has its bye next week before taking on Pacific Lutheran on April 3. The women play at PLU at 2 p.m., the men face the Lutes at home at 1 p.m.
