Kory Oleson picked up her 1,000-career point at Linfield with a jump shot in the fourth quarter in Monday night's 58-40 win for the Linfield Wildcats over the Corban Warriors. The West Linn, Oregon, native became just the ninth player in program history to achieve this feat as the Wildcats closed out non-conference play strong with a win over the Warriors, who were 8-4 coming into Monday.
Playing its first game that counted towards the record since December 3
rd, the Wildcats scored just 10 points in the first seven minutes of the game, but were able to extend their lead to 28-21 at the halftime break.
Coming into the game, just 17 points shy of the 1,000 mark, Oleson scored 12 of her 21 total points in the first half to lead the Wildcats. She also added six rebounds and three steals, which are a season-high.
Entering the fourth quarter just one shy of reaching the feat, a jumper with 7:22 left in the game, gave Oleson 1,001 points, which moved her eighth all-time in Linfield women's basketball history, moving past Andrea Wagner, who scored exactly 1,000. Oleson scored 1,000 points in just two and a half seasons at Linfield, playing her freshman season at Western Oregon.
"It's really good to do it at Linfield, a place that means a lot to me and really feels like home," said Oleson. "I'm really happy I could do it with this team, too."
Leading the way for Corban was Jordan Woodvine, who scored 19 points, she is among the top scorers in the NAIA, averaging 18.5 points per game, which is 12
th in the NAIA.
The Warriors had plenty of second chance opportunities throughout the evening, grabbing 23 offensive rebounds and scored nine points with their second attempts.
Corban pulled to within four points of Linfield, trailing 35-31 in the middle of the third quarter, but Linfield closed out the third quarter on a 9-0 run to lead 44-31 going into the final quarter.
With the win on Monday night, the Wildcats are 4-1 in home games thus far this season.
Besides Oleson's career night,
Delaney Ragan added 10 points as the only other Wildcat to reach double figures in scoring in this one. The freshman guard from Portland, Oregon, has reached the double-digit scoring mark is seven of the nine games this season and scoring nine in one of the other two games.
Among the top rebound getters in the Northwest Conference,
Molly Danielson grabbed 11 rebounds falling just two points shy of a double-double with eight points. She also added four assists. The senior center from Beaverton, Oregon is second in the NWC in scoring with 18 points per game and second in rebounding with 11.1 rebounds per game.
Danielson achieved the 1,000-career point mark last season and moved to fourth in program history with 1,207 points.
Paige LaFountain shot 3 for 5 from the field to add a quick six points in this one to lead the Wildcats' bench, which scored 14 points in this one.
Linfield enters Northwest Conference play next weekend with a record of 6-3, which is the program's best start under fifth-year coach
Casey Bunn-Wilson. The Wildcats finished fourth in NWC play a year ago and were picked to return to the conference tournament, being picked fourth in this season's preseason coaches poll.
