TACOMA, WASH. – After six scoreless innings, the Linfield Wildcats found a way to steal a road series from the Puget Sound Loggers by a final score of 5-1. Originally scheduled for March, the series finale was postponed until Tuesday afternoon and was played under cloudy skies at the Logger Baseball Stadium.
In the top of the sixth,
Ryan Ross led off the inning with a double to right and advanced to third on a passed ball.
Jake Gellos broke the scoreless tie with a two-out double to left field to score Ross, giving Linfield a 1-0 advantage.
The next inning allowed the 'Cats to gain a comfortable lead.
Ben Andrews delivered a double down the left-field line, scoring
Brady Rediger.
Ryan Pladson added to the 2-0 lead with a single up the middle to plate
Scott Hilpert, who reached base safely on a walk. Ross knocked a single to left, bringing home Andrews to push the lead to four. Finally, Sunday afternoon's hero
Cameron Fox lined an RBI double to right center, setting the score at 5-0.
The Loggers pushed one run across in the ninth but only threatened with two hits in the final frame.
Linfield ace Casson Cunningham got the start but only threw two innings before handing the ball to
Riley Newman, who picked up his fifth win of the season (5-1). Relievers
Matt Strang and
Dylan Peters helped finish the game by throwing one inning each.
The Wildcats (21-10, 16-5 NWC) won their 10th Northwest Conference game in a row to remain at the top of the conference ladder. The Loggers (11-19, 7-14 NWC) dropped their third straight game, putting them tied for eighth in the NWC with Pacific.
NEXT: Linfield heads to Walla Walla to face Whitman to finish the NWC regular season Friday and Saturday. With a series win, the Wildcats earn the right the host the conference tournament to begin postseason play.
