ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Linfield sophomore
Emily Sullenger made short work Saturday of three straight opponents – including Makayla Heymann of Wayland Baptist (Texas), ranked No. 15 in the NAIA – to reach the finals at the Women's West Coast Tournament of Champions.Â
Â
Sullenger dropped the championship match to seventh-ranked Louisa Schwab of Menlo College, but Linfield coach
Frank Johnson said she wrestled a fantastic tournament.Â
Â
Sullenger's first-round win was a quick pin of Eastern Oregon's Brooke Cicierski and her quarterfinal win was a pin of Ann Vo, who competes for the New York City Regional Training Center and the women's club team at Columbia University. She then outpointed Heymann, a Wayland Baptist freshman, in the 130-pound semifinals.Â
Â
"Emily was on fire today," Johnson said. "She's working hard and gaining confidence each time we compete, which bodes well for the second half of the season."Â
Â
Five Linfield women wrestled in the tournament, held at the 5,000-seat Roebbelen Center near Sacramento.Â
Â
At 143 pounds,
Klaira Flatt wrestled three close matches, including two that went the full six minutes – somewhat of a rarity under the high-scoring freestyle rules used for college women. Among Flatt's matches was a 14-7 victory over Madelyn Mazemke of Eastern Oregon.Â
Â
"Klaira is our iron woman," Johnson said. "She's wrestled more matches this season than anyone else on either our men's or women's team. She is tough, steady and comes prepared to battle every time out."Â
Â
Kami Hart, wrestling unattached at 191 pounds, pinned Gabrielle Shaddy of Umpqua Community College before running into the No. 1-ranked NAIA wrestler in the country and then the No. 8 NJCAA wrestler on the consolation side of the bracket.Â
Â
"Some days are like that," Johnson said. "We're getting better each time out, and we're going to start winning more of those matches as the season progresses."Â
